Last week, depending upon your view, it seemed as if ordinary
Americans had delivered the Senate a proverbial swift kick in the ass,
via phone calls, letters, and emails and the amnesty bill seemed
derailed. Unfortunately, we were aiming a little low, and to stop the
amnesty bill, it is going to require repeated blows around the heads of
our recalcitrant elites to get the message across that the average
American opposes amnesty in any shape or form.
First, in today's news, George Bush has abandoned what is good
for the country and instead is trying to make "immigration reform" his
legacy.
President
Bush,
in an emotional appeal, today urged Republican senators to enact a
comprehensive immigration reform bill that he supports.
Talking
to reporters after meeting with GOP senators at the senators' weekly
policy lunch, Bush said he understands that "this is a highly emotional
issue," but he told them that "now is the time to get it done," that
"the status quo is unacceptable."
In
the days since the immigration overhaul ran aground in the Senate, the
bill's proponents, including the president, have insisted that the
measure is not dead. At the end of an eight-day trip to Europe, Bush
urged Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to take up the bill
again as soon as possible.
"We
made two steps forward on immigration; we took a step back," Bush said
before leaving Sofia, Bulgaria, on Monday.
Reid
scowled when talking about the impasse today, complaining that "for
three days I was told by the GOP leadership that they would have a list
of amendments to vote on. That never happened." But the real dilemma,
he said, is that "Republicans do not support their own president's
bill."
Saying
that 80% of Democrats support the bill and 86% of Republicans oppose
it, Reid said he had no intention of taking up the bill until the GOP
leadership has "25 votes or so" for the legislation. "I'm not dancing
that tune again," he said.
George Bush isn't paying attention to the party faithful and has no
intention of doing so on the immigration issue. He has ignored our
pleas, he has dismissed our rational arguments, and considers all those
opposed to his amnesty quest racist and nativist. The Senate seemed
only to come around to "our" side grudgingly and who knows if another
"bipartisan" amnesty bill might gain favor and pass the upper house.
Those opposed to amnesty defeated this bill once, but if our
out-of-touch elites keep ignoring the will of the people, and if they
are determined enough, they will wear us down and wait us out.
So what should we do? We should try to set the agenda for
the immigration debate instead of reacting to the bad policy solutions
put forth by our leaders. We need to steer the debate towards
common sense goals that most Americans agree upon and that are good for
our nation as a whole.
To this end, nothing I am suggesting is earth shattering or
even slightly original. The goal of our movement should be to promote a
three layered agenda:
• Secure the border with Mexico first. Build
fences, install electronic surveillance equipment, and deploy more border
agents. Do what ever it takes and in short order.
• Adopt a zero tolerance policy for the hiring of
illegal immigrants by individuals and American business.
Tolerating this practice only encourages more illegal immigration.
• Allow these policies to take effect and see
what they do to current migration patterns.
• Only after the border has been truly secured and
American business no longer attracts illegal immigrants, should we
begin to discuss the fate of those illegal aliens who remain in this
nation.
Each and everyone of us should urge our friends and family
to call and write our Senators, our Representatives, and the President,
and this time, instead of urging them to vote against something, we
tell them to Secure the Borders and
Enforce
the Law First. Our message will be simple, unified, and loud: We
want you to Secure the Borders and Enforce the Law First.
I have no idea if we can be successful. I only know that if
we do nothing, our elitist politicians will give amnesty to 20 million
illegals aliens who have broken our laws and they will not secure our
border with Mexico.
So write your Senator, write your Representative, and write the
President and simply tell them to, "
Secure
the borders and Enforce the law first."
