Americans Prefer Securing the Border First

Our out of touch elites continue to promote a "comprehensive" immigration bill, despite, as evidenced by recent polls, and the public outcry against Senate bill 1348, that most Americans do not want amnesty tied to border control.

Our read of the situation, here at The Virtuous Republic, is that Americans are a pragmatic bunch.  They want to see incremental and real progress.  Thus, they want to see our southern border protected in a way that greatly reduces illegal immigration.  They want sanctions put on employers so that there is no incentive to come to America illegally.  Simply put, Americans remember the 1986 immigration reform that promised border security, but only delivered amnesty.  This time they want the problem fixed before they consider granting citizenship to people who have entered our nation illegally.

Yet, our elites consider opposition to their amnesty plan racist, nativist, and xenophobic.  Senator Feinstein says, "I've never received more hate or more racist phone calls and threats."  Trent Lott thinks everyone opposed to amnesty is a "Ditto Head".  He is quoted as saying, "Talk radio is running America.  We have to deal with that problem."  And President Bush said, "if you want to kill the bill, if you don't want to do what's right for America, you can pick one little aspect out of it, you can use it to frighten people."

Feinstein appears to think that opposition to her imperial Senatorial will is racist and threatening.  Lott can't stand the fact that the wisdom of the imperial Senate is being questioned by the likes of serfs like you and me.  And Bush equates opposition to giving amnesty to 12 million people who have broken our laws as "one little aspect" of an otherwise fine bill.  In other words, by opposing this bill, you are being anti-Hispanic.

Our leaders have their agenda set in stone.  Too bad most Americans prefer securing the border and cracking down on the employment of illegal immigrants over amnesty.

A June 11 poll by Angus-Reid found the following:

Which of the following statements comes closest to what you think the country needs to do to solve the illegal immigration problem?

• We need to completely overhaul the country’s immigration laws-34%

• We need to enforce the country’s current immigration laws -58%

If it were possible to locate most illegal immigrants currently in the United States, would you favour deporting as many as possible or would you favour setting up a system for them to become legal residents?

• Deport as many as possible-39%

• Set up system to become legal-51%

The government has staged a number of raids on businesses that employ large numbers of illegal immigrants where undocumented workers are immediately sent to detention centers. Do you generally support or oppose these raids?

• Support the raids-55%

• Oppose the raids-34%

Ramussen, on June 13 found that only 20% of Americans wanted "comprehensive immigration" reform.  Instead, Americans prefer "smaller" steps in the immigration reform process.

Sixty-nine percent (69%) of voters would favor an approach that focuses exclusively on “exclusively on securing the border and reducing illegal immigration.” Support for the enforcement only approach comes from 84% of Republicans, 55% of Democrats, and 69% of those not affiliated with either major party.

Overall, just 21% are opposed to the enforcement-only approach.

Just 30% would favor legislation that focused “exclusively on legalizing the status of undocumented workers already living in the United States.” Fifty-seven percent (57%) oppose that strategy, including 63% of Republicans, 52% of Democrats, and 55% of unaffiliated voters.

Fifty-seven percent (57%) favor a proposal giving “all illegal aliens up to three years to leave the United States. After leaving, the illegal aliens would have to get in line and wait their turn for legal entry into the United States.” Support for that concept comes from 67% of Republicans, 49% of Democrats, and 56% of unaffiliated voters.

Finally, Angus-Reid, in a June 18 poll, shows that Americans definitely prefer the border/employment route to immigration reform over amnesty.

Which of the following actions do you think would be most effective in reducing the number of illegal immigrants who come to the U.S. across the Mexican border

• Increasing the penalties on employers who hire illegal immigrants-55%

• Increasing the number of border patrol agents-25%

• Building more fences on the border-7%

The American people aren't being hateful on this issue.  Despite my personal belief that as many illegal aliens should be sent back home as possible, most Americans don't share that belief according to the polling data.  They simply want border security and the continued employment of illegal aliens dealt with first and dealt with effectively before they consider the legal status of the 12 million illegal aliens in this country.  That isn't racist, hateful, or nativist, it is simply pragmatism at work, and what irks our leaders, it is counter to their great wisdom found in their "amnesty" bill.

Our leadership is upset because we want to lead on this issue and that we, the "lowly peasants", will not bow to their enlightened plan.  They need to get over their illusion that they are a fount of wisdom on this issue.  To make our voices heard, that we want border security and the enforcement of our labor laws first, please click on the following icon and you will find contact information for your Senator, your Representative, and the President and please tell them to "Secure the Borders and Enforce the Law" before we consider amnesty.
