Category Image It Has Come Down to This:  The Left has Abandoned Foreign Policy

What do you call it when you retreat from an enemy that can't defeat you?  What adjectives do you use to describe those politicians in the Senate and the House that call for such a retreat?

The U.S. Senate on Thursday defied a veto threat by President George W. Bush and joined with the House of Representatives in backing a timetable for withdrawing American combat troops from Iraq.

In a mostly party-line 51-47 vote, the Democratic-controlled Senate told Bush to start withdrawing the troops this year with the goal of getting all combat soldiers out by March 31, 2008.

"The ball is in the president's court. We have done what we needed to do" by passing a bill with even more money for the troops and veterans than Bush requested, said House Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat.

The left is naive.  The left has abandoned reason, part of our Western heritage from the Renaissance, and substituted feelings and good intentions.  The left is ruled by their fear.  The left will not assume or recognize that with power comes the duty to defend one's nation.  The left ignores the world around them.  The left is more concerned with social policies and it seems that our taxes will be raised for transfer policies that don't work.

If America is forced to retreat from an enemy that is no match for us on the battlefield by March of 2008, the United States will pay the price for the left's lack of fortitude in the coming years.  Machiavelli, in The Discourses, wrote:
And so, to return to our subject, irresolute republics never take a wise course except by force; for their weakness never allows them to resolve upon anything where there is a doubt; and if that doubt is not overcome by some force, they remain forever in a state of suspense.
In other words, the left will allow foreign policy issues to fester, until the United States is forced by events to react to our enemies.  In essence, we are witnessing the repeat of the Clinton policy that ignored the first Trade Center bombing, that ignored the Khobar Tower bombings, that ignored the embassy bombings in Africa, and that ignored the attack on the U.S.S. Cole.

History might note the Bush Administration's bungling of the Iraq occupation, but it will focus on why the American left abandoned war as a tool of foreign policy.
