What is it to be an American? Certainly it isn’t race.
Instead, being American requires one to subscribe to our founding political traditions.
• a benevolent creator who endows each individual with certain basic rights. The beauty and genius of which is that no king, no president, and no government can take away those God given rights, as God is the ultimate authority.
• the constitution is the written will of the people.
• belief in limited government
• belief in property rights
• belief in individualism
• belief in self-help
• adherence to the protestant work ethic
• belief in “Yankee ingenuity”.
• belief that our nation, out of many is special, unique
• belief in the fundamental goodness of men.
• belief in limited constitutional government to check the bad tendencies of men.
I’m not going to rehash what Wright has said in the past. If you want to read what he has to say, just look at my previous posts.
When Wright damns America, he says he is just damning the government, but the people themselves. As Lincoln said, “of the people….” But since Americans are defined by our political culture–The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, Locke, Montesquieu, Machiavelli, Harrington and so on, he does damn the average American when he damns the government.
You can’t separate one from the other. When you reject our system of government, you reject your American identity. You’ve become un-American. You’ve become something else.
Quite simply, you can’t be a good American, and reject American political culture.
Our political culture is what defines us as Americans and is what unites us as Americans.
In essence, the Reverend Wright rejects democracy, rejects individualism, rejects individual rights, rejects property rights, rejects limited government, rejects natural rights, rejects the protestant work ethic.
He rejects everythings that makes us Americans.
It isn’t anything new, the drug induced leftism of the late 1960s and Wright’s liberation theology are cut from the same cloth of un-Americanism.
And to move the argument a step forward, if Wright and the left are un-American and reject our classical liberal and republican roots, what do they believe in?
• Whereas we believe in individual rights guaranteed by God, they believe in group rights defined by the state.
• Whereas we believe in property rights as part of our God given birthright, they believe in the distribution of your wealth.
• Whereas we believe in the goodness of men, they believe most people are flawed and need to be controlled by the state.
• Whereas we believe in hard work, they believe in the welfare state.
• Whereas we believe in the worth of the individual, they believe in worth of the group.
• Whereas we believe in the goodness of men, they believe their is a conspiracy behind every action.
That is why, when someone is labeled un-American, it isn’t some specious accusation. Wholesale dismissal, one might even say hate of our political culture threatens that which unites us as a nation.
