Any free man or woman could have told you that red light cameras have nothing to do with safety. They are simply means of taxation that you the voter have no say in.

It seems that a number of municipalities shortened the yellow light so that they could take your money in the name of safety.

My, how we as free people have fallen.

Six U.S. cities have been found guilty of shortening the amber cycles below what is allowed by law on intersections equipped with cameras meant to catch red-light runners. The local governments in question have ignored the safety benefit of increasing the yellow light time and decided to install red-light cameras, shorten the yellow light duration, and collect the profits instead.

The cities in question include Union City, CA, Dallas and Lubbock, TX, Nashville and Chattanooga, TN, Springfield, MO, according to Motorists.org, which collected information from reports from around the country. Read more….

5 Comments to “Red Light Cameras for Profit, Not Safety”

  1. Eeyore says:

Red light cameras ARE for safety…but the unscrupulous amongst us can always find a way to pervert the benefit to their own gain. Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.

  2. Sam Paris says:

Red light cameras are not about safety, they actually cause more accidents than they prevent. See the report at http://www.thenewspaper.com/rl.....eport3.asp

  3. The Machiavellian says:

If localities were concerned about safety, they would lengthen the yellow lights and put in a delay between the red light and the next green light.

As it is now, it just a revenue enhancement program that most localities cheat on, by shortening the yellow light cycle.

The funny thing is, that usually two things happen. One, the shortened lights cause people to slam their brakes on, causing more rear end accidents and also, people tend to avoid those intersections, thus revenue declines….

    Thanks for comment Sam

  4. Petition to get the vote to a ballot, cameras NEVER win when the people vote. 15 states have ruled them illegal so far. Keep demanding your rights.
