I’ve seen this observation made at several other blogs over the last couple of weeks, that in general, there just don’t seem to be many campaign signs out this year and even fewer bumper stickers.
To start with, I live in a very Republican township, Green Township, Ohio, but I work in a very liberal area, Hyde Park, Cincinnati.
In 2004, the liberals in Hyde Park were Kerry fanatics. Kerry bumper stickers, Kerry embroidered sweaters and hats, Kerry pins, and Kerry yard signs were everywhere. In fact, they were so overwhelming, for the first time in my life, I put a bumper sticker on my car-Bush/Cheney- just to interject a little balance in the area. In fact, I surmised at the time, because of all the Kerry enthusiasm, that Bush was probably going to lose.
This year, I’ve seen no such enthusiasm for Obama, even among African-Americans. I see an occasional Obama button and a few bumper stickers, but I swear there are just as many Kerry stickers from ‘04 on cars as Obama stickers.
In Green Township, in which I drive across its entirety, from the guarded Cincinnati frontier, right up to the Miami Township border, I also note a dearth of political yard signs.
On the way home across God’s country, I counted 20 McCain signs to 9 Obama signs. But, I noted that Steve Chabot, our incumbent Republican Representative had 45 signs, while his Democratic opponent (whom I went to high school with), Steve Driehaus, only had 10 signs.
The interesting thing, is that 25 people were willing to put Chabot’s signs in their yard that didn’t bother to put up a McCain sign. (And once again, in 2006, Chabot’s opponent was Cranley, who if I remember, had Green Township plastered with hundreds of signs–yet this year’s Democratic opponent has hardly bothered).
While all this means nothing, I’m going to assume that while Republicans in Green Township aren’t wild about McCain, that somebody with a Chabot sign is obviously going to pull the lever for McCain. At least in Green Township, Ohio, McCain should have a good day on Tuesday–if the signs mean anything.
And furthermore, where is all the liberal excitement for Obama? Very weird this year, very weird…

I think more people are only concerned about the money in their pocket right now. I work for a used car company and we’ve seen sales drop so sharply they have been cutting job positions…thank the lord I’m safe from layoffs:) Also, I work in a very poor part of cincinnati, Hartwell down on Vine St, and I see nothing but Obama t-shirts and hats that our customers wear…..
