Arizona Finds that Illegals Depress Wages

A study sanctioned by the state of Arizona, or more precisely, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, found that illegal aliens depressed the wages of native Americans.

Illegal immigrants depressed wages in Arizona to the tune of $1.4 billion in 2006 and dipped lower-skilled legal workers’ pay by 4.7 percent.

That is according to a study by a Harvard University economist commissioned by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. The MCAO had the study done as part of its defense of the state’s new employer sanctions law.

Business and Hispanic groups have challenged that law questioning its validity and arguing it would hurt the state’s economy.

The study by Harvard economist George Borjas said hiring illegal immigrants depresses wages because they work for lower pay and sometimes are paid under the table. The study said illegal immigrants primarily impact wages and jobs held by legal workers with lower education levels. Borjas said that illegals make up 10 percent of all state workers and decrease all wages by 1.5 percent. Read more….

We here at The Virtuous Republic, wish illegal immigration was just a problem caused by the left. Unfortunately, as we all should know by now, politicians on the left, as well as the right are enablers of the illegal flow of people from the third world across our not so sovereign borders.

On the right, the main problem that we have to fight is good old fashioned greed. Whether it is a business moving its manufacturing overseas to save a buck, or local company that hires illegals to save on wages, those who we would otherwise consider conservatives, simply break the law to save money. Unfortunately, their gain, is a net loss for our nation and its citizens.

On the left, the support for illegal immigration comes from the unwillingness to defend their own country. America’s left views the U.S. as immoral and as a result, liberals in general no longer have a reason, nor do they have the will to protect a nation-state that they see as illegitimate.

One would think, that a study like this, which shows the poorest of Americans are the ones most affected by illegal immigration, would force the left to oppose illegal immigration–as their supposed base is made up of the working poor. Instead, their aversion to the American nation-state overrides their economic philosophical imperatives, and they view illegal immigration as a way to make up for past imperialist policies of the American government.

The bottom line? Is that if conservatives are waiting for the left to defend the poor by opposing illegal immigration, they are deluding themselves. Furthermore, if conservatives are waiting to be lead by our elites, once again, this is a grand illusion, because our conservative political class, for the most part, view illegal immigration as a net benefit to business profits, a way to keep consumer prices down, and a means to fight wage inflation.

I don’t want to sound conspiratorial. The left, as well as the right, have no grand plans to destroy our nation through illegal immigration. Instead, they are simply acting on their core philosophies, one which despises America as a moral entity and the other who holds the dollar above everything else.

As a result, it will take another broadside from the conservative base to bring our elites back into line on illegal immigration. In other words, make your voice heard. Write the White House, write your Federal Representative or Senator and write your local government, expressing your support for strong measures against illegal immigration.
