A local talk show host mentioned this four story mural of George Washington in drag last week. The mural is located in the Camp Washington neighborhood of Cincinnati. It is an older industrial area, located a few miles from the University of Cincinnati.
Bill Cunningham, rightly so, lambasted this “artwork” for its disrespectful portrayal of a man whose military tactics and disinterest in personal power, brought this country into being and allowed its republican form of government to take root and flower.

Having seen the mural in person, I can definitely say the artwork itself is top notch, but that is the shame of it. In the mural, the artists pay respect to area’s meat packing history with the pigs and cow, its industry with the tin robot, and its costume shop represented by the ape…. Had they simply painted Washington in his military uniform, it would have been a beautiful piece of work.
Instead, President Washington is seen in a dress, complete with jewelery. I’m guessing Washington is supposed to be a “queen”, a reference, along with the crown, to Cincinnati’s nickname of The Queen City.
Intellectually, I understand what most of the elements of the painting are supposed to mean. I also understand that those who created the piece have the freedom of speech to do so.
Yet, just because one can, doesn’t mean one should. Tolerance and freedom when applied to poor taste demeans those values. Washington was a great man, flaws and all, who without, this country would simply not exist as it does today.
So who was behind this four story painting? Channel 9 has a background piece here.
In essence, it seems the Camp Washington Community Council sponsored and approved of it. You can look at the group who was behind it here. (If the Camp Washinton Community Council would like to enlighten me about this mural, please email me).
Here’s my guess about their motives. More than likely, they are Democrats and by default, more than likely leftists. Like most leftists, they find their country flawed and its founders, values, and institutions corrupt, violent, and stained by “original sin”. Morality and decency are relevant and let’s face it, Washington is a dead white guy anyway who once owned slaves!
So, putting Washington in drag, at least to them, wasn’t disrespectful (for how can you be disrespectful to the founder of such a horrible nation).
It is simply sad that the left can’t refrain from attacking the symbols of our country, that they can’t refrain from attacking that which unites us and defines us as Americans.
Respect for our history, our culture, our institutions, and our national values should be stressed. They are what not only make our nation great, they are what help individuals succeed.
So what message is this mural sending? What values does it try to import? Are they the values that Camp Washington needs to succeed?

That’s really pathetic. George Washington was probably one of the most morally upright men this nation has ever seen. To depict him in drag is most definitely disrespect, no matter who does it.
I wonder… if conservatives acted the way adherents of the “religion of peace” do, how the artist would feel? Perhaps he/she/it ought to be grateful that conservatives are much more tolerant when their icons are insulted.
